Floris, who currently lives in Rotterdam, is moving to Utrecht with his girlfriend Milou at the beginning of 2025. The reason? Not only Milou, but also Floris has recently started working in our beautiful “cathedral city”. He joined our team in Utrecht on November 1. We would like to introduce him to you in more detail.
Due to a poor grade in French in the third grade at Havo, Floris had to stay in school. He saw things differently and decided to switch to the VMBO-TL. No more French, but more technology! After completing secondary school without a hitch, he continued his training at the MTS Mechanical Engineering. He particularly remembers the workshop lessons, lathe, CNC milling machines and his internship at Vekoma Rides. The next logical station was the HTS Mechanical Engineering at the Zuyd Hogeschool.
Too much of a challenge
In view of the growing importance of sustainability and the energy transition, Floris chose to focus on energy engineering. A challenging choice, as energy is a rather abstract concept. This course also went well. But Floris was looking for even more challenges and decided to take a pre-master’s at the University of Twente as a free choice during his final year of study. This turned out to be quite challenging: In the first round of exams, he only passed one subject out of four. That was a wake-up call. In the second round, he passed four out of seven exams, but had to make full use of the catch-up exams. However, one subject – Calculus – remained insurmountable, which is why he did not complete the Pre-Master. Nevertheless, Floris looks back on this time with pride. The leap from MBO to Pre-Master was a great learning process and proof that he had more in him. Floris completed his HBO final internship at Driven by Values, an energy transition consultancy. There, he optimized a calculation method for business cases in the field of heating networks. This brought him into contact with underground infrastructure for the first time.
Sensitive technician
After his studies, Floris moved to Rotterdam and started his career at Baas BV as a cable and line engineer. Baas BV is a service provider for grid operators, and here Floris took on a hands-on role in the energy transition. After 2.5 years as an engineer, he was given the opportunity to become Team Leader Engineering. Together with a team of nine dedicated engineers, he worked on the reinforcement and renewal of electricity and gas grids throughout the Netherlands. What Floris is most proud of? That his team grew from three to nine members in two years. In the process, he discovered that technology suits him, but that his strength also lies in the human aspect. This combination, often described as an “empathetic technician”, suits him perfectly. Floris has been part of Perfact since November 1st. Here, he will focus on expanding our services in the field of underground infrastructure. “My ambition is to combine my expertise in cable and pipeline planning with the strength of the Perfact Group. Together, I want to make a significant contribution to the energy transition by implementing innovative and sustainable solutions for the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
Always on the move
Besides work, Floris still spends time on other things. “For 20 years, I mainly filled my free time with handball. I played for V&L and Smurfen United in Geleen, Manos in Maastricht and two years in the first division at Feyenoord Handball. After Corona, I stopped playing handball and started running. Last year I ran the Rotterdam Marathon, but it didn’t go as planned – I ended up taking 5 hours and 30 minutes. Now I’m training for the marathon in April 2025 and I’m determined to improve my time significantly! I also ride my road bike from time to time, bake real Limburg vlaai (I learned that from my mom) and am always up for a good party.” Welcome to Perfact, Floris, and good luck in your new position!
